A healthy diet requires eating a variety of foods as no single food can supply us with all the nutrients that are required to stay healthy. As an example, we get vitamin C from oranges, but they do not provide us with Vitamin B12. And while we get Vitamin B12 from cheese, it does not provide us with Vitamin C. We also must try and make sure that we get the correct number of servings from each of the five major food groups, which are fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods and dairy products.

By this thinking, a person who eats a healthy balanced diet receives all the vitamins and minerals he or she requires. A fact supported by the Department of Health & Human Services, State Government of Victoria, Australia“Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and cereals will give your body the vitamins it needs, at the right level and in the right balance.”

But in this World, who actually eats a balanced, healthy diet? In modern, progressive and affluent nations, most eat fast food, junk food or salty and sugary processed foods devoid of nutrients, especially vitamins and minerals. In those nations that are less modern or less affluent, inhabitants eat what the can find to survive.

What about those who are sick, elderly or pregnant? Growing children also need nutritional support for growing bones and teeth. From the same article cited above, “People who may need vitamin supplements include pregnant and breastfeeding women, people who consume alcohol in amounts over the recommended level, drug users and the elderly.”
